PARAMUS, N.J. (AP) -- Hudson City Bancorp's profit leaped 25 percent in the
first quarter as the mortgage crisis plaguing many other lenders pushed much of
the bank's competition out of the market, the company said Tuesday.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Pentair Inc., a diversified manufacturer, said Tuesday
first-quarter earnings rose 5 percent as operating margins improved with better
volume, pricing, product mix and productivity.
TROY, Mich. (AP) -- Kelly Services Inc. said Tuesday its first-quarter
profit fell nearly 31 percent, as weakness in the U.S. job market crimped the
temporary staffing company's earnings.
AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- FirstMerit Corp. posted a flat profit in the first
quarter as loan growth and a fatter profit margin offset losses on bad loans,
the bank said Tuesday.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Media and marketing company Meredith Corp. said
Tuesday its fiscal third-quarter profit climbed 2 percent, helped by lowered
costs and increased revenue from non-advertising sources.
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Managed-care programs provider Centene Corp. said Tuesday
its first-quarter profit declined 33 percent compared with a year-ago period
which included a hefty tax gain, but earnings still topped Wall Street
forecasts.
NEW YORK (AP) -- Petroleum driller Nabors Industries Ltd. said its
first-quarter profit fell 12 percent as contracts renewed at lower rates,
especially in South Texas, but results still beat analysts' estimates.
NEW YORK (AP) -- Arbitron Inc. said Tuesday first-quarter profit rose 5
percent, helped by a gain from the sale of CSW Research Ltd.
