(AP) - Among the earnings stories for Thursday, April 24, from AP Financial
News:

earnings Thursday, a result the company considered a strong showing in the face
of a 42 percent jump in feedstock and energy costs.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) -- Costly materials and weak U.S. demand during
what Whirlpool called the toughest economic market in three decades contributed
to a nearly 20 percent drop in first-quarter profits, the company said Thursday.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Union Pacific Corp. said Thursday its net income jumped
15 percent in the first quarter because price increases and fuel surcharges
helped boost revenue even as shipping volume remained flat.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The Travelers Cos. Inc., one of the nation's largest
commercial insurers, said its first-quarter profit declined 11 percent as it
fought a competitive insurance market and lower investment income.
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Shares of KLA-Tencor Corp., which sells microchip
testing equipment, said Thursday its fiscal third-quarter profit fell 28.3
percent on lower sales.
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Defense contractors Northrop Grumman and Raytheon Co.,
each posted first-quarter earnings Thursday that beat analysts' expectations,
capping a week of robust, higher-than-forecast earnings by several rival
contractors reaping a windfall from the boost in U.S. military and aerospace
spending in recent years.
