writedown in its mortgage portfolio caused the nation's fifth-largest U.S.
investment bank to post the first loss in its 84-year history.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Package courier FedEx Corp. reported Thursday its
second-quarter profit fell 6 percent from a year ago, largely due to high fuel
costs and a sluggish U.S. economy.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- ConAgra Foods Inc. said Thursday that strong performance
from its commodities trading group helped the company overcome the cost of a pot
pie recall and post a 15 percent jump in second-quarter earnings.

Thursday its second-quarter profits rose about 1 percent on increased
international sales.
CINCINNATI (AP) -- Cintas Corp., the nation's largest uniform supplier, said
Thursday its fiscal 2008 second-quarter earnings slightly rose, matching Wall
Street's expectations, as business growth was countered by higher taxes and
expansion costs.
