BRUSSELS, Oct 9 (Reuters) - The European Commission on Wednesday approved an
application by Britain and Ireland to provide 30 million euros ($41 million) of
state aid to fund a telecommunications link between the two countries.
"The project should lower the costs of international connectivity for all
border counties and act as a catalyst for further investment in the region's
telecommunications market," EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said in a
statement.
The undersea cable will come ashore on the north coast of Ireland and
terminate in Derry in Northern Ireland, with Letterkenny and Monaghan in the
republic also benefiting.
