for American Cancer Society 'Relay For Life(R)'
- Giant 8-Ft. Luminaria to Canvass U.S.; Dressbarn to Donate 10 Cents for Every
Signature as Part of $200,000 Contribution to the American Cancer Society -
NEW YORK, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Dressbarn (NASDAQ:DBRNNASDAQ:
http://dressbarn.com), a chain of women's apparel specialty stores, in
collaboration with the American Cancer Society today kicked off a national
fundraising and awareness campaign for the American Cancer Society Relay For
Life(R) program. Dressbarn founder Roslyn Jaffe, a cancer survivor, is
chairperson of "Sign & Show Your Support, America." The centerpiece of the campaign is giant 8 ft.-tall luminaria that will travel
across the country this summer for the public to sign with messages of hope and
remembrance. For every signature, Dressbarn will contribute 10 cents as part
of its Relay For Life total contribution of $200,000 to the American Cancer
Society (http://www.cancer.org/).
"As a cancer survivor it's a honor and a pleasure for me to help raise funds
and awareness for an organization as terrific as the American Cancer Society
and its Relay For Life program," said Mrs. Jaffe. "It is through events like
these and the people committed to helping, many of them Dressbarn associates,
that we are making strides to overcome this disease. It is in tribute to them
that we launched this campaign." Dressbarn is a longtime supporter of the American Cancer Society and deeply
committed to the cause at every level, from its president and CEO David R. Jaffe to the thousands of Dressbarn store associates who raise funds and
participate on Relay For Life teams in local communities. The company is a
proud member of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life National Team
Program and this year has more than doubled its participation and contribution
to the cause. American Cancer Society Relay For Life events are held overnight
in 4,200 communities in the U.S. and 11 foreign countries and raise millions of
dollars each year.
"'Sign & Show Your Support, America' is an outgrowth of our participation in
Relay For Life by thousands of our passionate and dedicated associates who each
year give their own time and personal commitment to raise money for the
American Cancer Society," said Dressbarn president and CEO David R. Jaffe. "The
small luminaria ceremony is a very emotional part of Relay For Life events,"
said Mr. Jaffe. "The luminaria represent hope and also remind us that cancer
does not rest during the night, which is also why Relay For Life is an
overnight event up to twenty-four hours long.
The "Sign & Show Your Support, America" giant luminaria will travel in June to
New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles to
coincide with local Relay For Life events. Others cities and dates will be
named later.
"Virtually every American will be touched by cancer in their lifetime," said
Gary J. Streit, national volunteer chairman of the American Cancer Society
Board of Directors. "Dressbarn is doing a great service in raising awareness
and funds with this campaign, helping us reach our goal of eliminating cancer
as a major health problem. We'd love to see every inch of these giant
luminaria covered with signatures, messages of love and hope, and more messages
of life after cancer, from the general public to celebrities." DATASOURCE: Dressbarn CONTACT: John Eccleston of OpenGate, +1-845-353-2685, , for Dressbarn Web site: http://dressbarn.com/ http://www.cancer.org/
