Dollar General Literacy Foundation Awards Over $1.5 Million in Grants

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn., May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The Dollar General Literacy Foundation, a philanthropic arm of Dollar General Corporation , announced that it has awarded over $1,516,000 in grants to 136 nonprofit organizations across the company's 30-state market area. The Foundation awarded $1,000,000 in grants to 129 nonprofit organizations through its annual open solicitation process and over $516,000 in targeted grants for national and regional literacy initiatives. The grants went to nonprofit literacy providers dedicated to increasing the functional literacy of adults and families.

Dollar General Literacy Foundation grants provide program support to nonprofit literacy organizations in the Dollar General market area with the intent of helping literacy providers increase their capacity to serve low- level literacy adults and their families. Programs supported through the Foundation's grants include adult basic education, GED preparation, English as a second language, family literacy and workforce literacy initiatives.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation accepts proposals on an annual basis.

The next Request for Proposal submission deadline is April 8, 2005. RFP packages will be available online January 7, 2005.
