CHICAGO, Dec. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Big hospital equipment may be essential to doctors' work, but it can also be a space hog that limits efficiencies for doctors. With space at a premium in the clinical environment, portable, accessible and adjustable technology is a growing commodity. Today at the Radiological Society of North America (#RSNA14) annual meeting, GE Healthcare (NYSE: GE) announced its latest solutions to answer to rising demands on clinicians' time and energy: solutions with improved mobility and accessibility. With these latest innovations, doctors can move around more freely, allowing them to be more nimble and get to a diagnosis quickly.

The Rail-Free Discovery IGS flexible and accessible imaging system
The Discovery* IGS 740 is a rail-free, laser-guided premium interventional X-ray system that brings high-quality imaging and complete workspace freedom to interventional radiology procedures. Its mobile gantry platform provides outstanding imaging flexibility while keeping the ceiling unobstructed to freely position the monitors, radiation shields and lights during interventions. Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. is the first to install a Discovery IGS 740 in the U.S.

"This new system gives us the freedom we've been looking for to access patients during complex interventional procedures," said Robert Rhee, MD Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Maimonides Medical Center. "The utilization is diverse and the predictability of movement gives our team the confidence we need to perform a wide range of procedures free of any interference you may get from fixed floor or ceiling structures."

The GE 41x41-cm detector (16.1 inches) offers one of the largest fields of view in the industry to image large anatomies at low dose in a single image. The wide bore C-arm makes it easier for clinicians to image the anatomy of interest and accommodate large patients. The dedicated arm-imaging positions facilitate arm fistulograms for hemodialysis patients, enabling full patient access from the left or right.

"Our goal was to design a product that truly puts physicians at the center of their interventions," said Chantal Le Chat, general manager of Interventional for GE Healthcare. "The Discovery IGS 740 provides a solution that successfully combines advanced imaging, unusual mobility for fixed systems and unparalleled patient access."

The Discovery IGS 740 also meets the clinical needs in interventional oncology. By combining the large 41x41-cm detector and the wide-bore C-arm, physicians can easily perform off-centered liver 3D acquisitions to support chemoembolization or Y90 procedures. With AW, GE's multi-modality software platform, they can take advantage of interventional oncology applications such as FlightPlan for Liver, which highlights vessels travelling to the tumor's vicinity and helps interventional radiologists be selective in liver embolization. Discovery IGS 740 received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. FDA in April 2014.

From power up to clean up: Venue 50 portable ultrasound helps boost diagnostic precision
The Venue* 50 tablet-style ultrasound delivers crisp images quickly with the simplicity of a tablet. The intuitive touch user interface offers easy gel-and-go scanning – a clinician can just select the probe and preset in one step. Designed for speed, it takes just moments to boot up and has no buttons, keyboard or knobs to slow clinicians down when scanning the patient or disinfecting the system.

Next-generation pocket-sized ultrasound: Vscan with Dual Probe
The Vscan* with Dual Probe is a pocket-sized ultrasound with the first-of its kind 2-in-1 probe, allowing clinicians to see both shallow and deep views of the body without changing probes. This latest innovation enables efficient triage and fast workflow, which may lead to time and cost savings in point-of-care settings. It also may add clinical value in a wide variety of resource-constrained environments, all from a pocket-sized device that covers many ultrasound procedures.
