                            Director's Shareholding                            

The Company has been informed that Graham Heard, Exploration and Technical
Director of Northern, has this afternoon purchased in his SIPP 23,600 ordinary
shares of the Company at a price of 127.5p per share. Following this purchase
Mr Heard's total beneficial shareholding has increased to 139,123 ordinary
shares, which represents 0.19 per cent of the issued share capital of the
Company.
