Digimarc Corporation (NASDAQ:DMRC) today announced a new agreement to
license its patents to Media Sciences International (MSI), a global
market leader in providing digital watermarking solutions and services
to the music industry.
MSI supports the major music labels worldwide, with industry-leading
forensic tracking services for the secure distribution and tracking of
promotional content.
Under the agreement, MSI intends to provide a broad range of digital
watermarking solutions to the music industry enabling the adoption of
new, sustainable DRM-free online business models and improved
experiences for consumers.
“We are pleased with the opportunity to work
with MSI, as they extend their offerings,”
said Stuart Rosove, General Manager, Media and Entertainment, Digimarc. “With
this new license agreement, MSI can address the music industry’s
requirements to better identify, manage and secure the digital
distribution of music without compromising consumer expectations.”
“MSI has a proven record working with the
major music labels to identify copies of their music to track and deter
piracy. By working with trusted partners such as Digimarc, we believe we
are uniquely positioned to assist the music industry to take advantage
of new business models through innovative uses of digital watermarking
which enable unique value-added experiences for music lovers,”
said Graham Oakes, CEO, MSI.
Currently, MSI’s solutions are incorporated in
more than 5 million audio tracks from the major record labels to
identify and track leaks of promotional, pre-release music onto the
Internet. By embedding a digital watermark into music to help identify
the authorized recipient, content owners can identify where pre-release
music left the path of authorized distribution. The watermark content
identifier can also enable promotional applications such as linking the
copy of the music to the most up-to-date promotional material for the
authorized recipient.
MSI will be focused on providing value-added solutions for:
Broadcast and Internet monitoring, enabling accurate metrics and
analysis of content;
Parental advisory marking to support Parental Controls in various
playback applications;
Media serialization to support value-add bonus content for consumers
as well as piracy deterrence; and,
Network content linking to authorized bonus content, enhancing
consumer experiences.
