DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc. said Monday that it would acquire privately-held dialysis care company Renal Ventures Ltd. for $415 million, a move to expand its kidney care division.

Denver-based DaVita operates about 2,200 clinics across 46 states and 10 countries outside of the U.S. and provides treatment to about 184,000 patients through DaVita Kidney Care. With Renal Ventures, DaVita will add 36 dialysis clinics in six states. In addition, divisions of Renal—Multispecialty Physician Partners and Physician Venture Partners—operate infusion and vascular centers, respectively, in three states.

"In today's changing health care environment, combining with DaVita...will benefit all of our stakeholders," Renal Chief Executive Larry Chatfield said.

Shares in DaVita, down 9.6% over the past three months, were inactive premarket.
