NEW YORK, Feb. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Crystal Research Associates, LLC announced today that it has issued an updated Executive Informational Overview(R) (EIO(R)) on Newton, Massachusetts-based Pro-Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (AMEX:PRW). The full 60-page report can be found at http://www.crystalra.com/ and pro-pharmaceuticals.com .
Pro-Pharmaceuticals, Inc. ("Pro-Pharmaceuticals" or "the Company") is working toward the commercialization of a new generation of anti-cancer treatments using carbohydrate molecules with the intent of enhancing the safety and efficacy of standard cancer agents. The Company's technology capitalizes on the natural property of bio-molecules to seek and attach to the surface of living cells. Applying this concept to cancer treatment, Pro-Pharmaceuticals is developing carbohydrate "tags" that selectively induce chemotherapy drugs to target cancer cells while limiting their tendency to harm healthy tissue-whether near a tumor or elsewhere in the body.
The need to improve drug therapies, particularly anti-cancer agents, is significant and represents a large market opportunity. Chemotherapies in use today typically cause serious adverse side effects that dramatically decrease a patient's quality of life. DAVANAT(R), the Company's lead pipeline candidate, may increase the efficacy and decrease the toxicity of current chemotherapies when used in combination with existing U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved cancer drugs.
In combination with 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU)-a widely used chemotherapeutic- DAVANAT(R) has successfully completed a Phase I clinical trial for all solid tumors and a Phase II trial for third- and fourth-line metastatic colorectal cancer. The Company is currently engaged in two Phase II trials for first- line treatment of colorectal and biliary cancer and has initiated a Phase III trial in Europe for second-line treatment of colorectal cancer. Furthermore, Pro-Pharmaceuticals has undertaken pre-clinical work with DAVANAT(R) in combination with other chemotherapeutics and has entered into a research collaboration with the Mount Sinai School of Medicine to evaluate the anti-fibrotic effects of some of the Company's novel carbohydrate compounds.
