Peugeot CEO Asks Germany's Merkel to Discuss Opel - Peugeot Spokeswoman

By Nick Kostov

PARIS--Peugeot SA (UG.FR) Chief Executive Carlos Tavares has requested a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, a Peugeot spokeswoman said Wednesday.

The German leader has yet to respond, the spokeswoman said. Mr. Tavares wants to meet with Ms. Merkel to discuss Peugeot's potential acquisition of General Motors Co's (GM) Opel AG business, the car maker that employs more than 16,500 workers in Germany.

Germany's government said on Wednesday that it will be involved "as closely as possible" in talks about a possible sale.

"Of course it's a business decision that I'm not evaluating here...but the government will form its own opinion," said a spokesman for Ms. Merkel at a news conference on Wednesday afternoon following the government's cabinet meeting.
