Employees made improvements to rec center, neighborhood park and pool complex

Employees from Constellation joined the Baltimore City Recreation and Parks department and officers from the Western Police District today in West Baltimore’s Sandtown neighborhood to revitalize the Lillian B. Jones Recreation Center and surrounding area. The group painted, installed shelving, removed vines from trees, cleaned up trash, and assembled items from the center’s wish list that were donated by Constellation, including basketball hoops and table games.

“Recreation centers are anchors of support for city youth, and many are in need of improvements or new equipment. That’s why we chose to work with Recreation and Parks and the Western Police District to revitalize the Lillian B. Jones Recreation Center and ensure that city students have a great place to learn and play,” said Joseph Nigro, CEO of Constellation. “Constellation remains committed to giving back to our hometown of Baltimore, and the city can continue to count on our support.”

The group also repainted the pergola entryways and cut vines from trees at the Pauline Fauntleroy Park, and repainted the fence at the William Mcabee pool. Prior to the event, Constellation also conducted an employee drive for school supplies and made a monetary donation to the center for new office equipment.

“Collaboration between the city and local businesses is key to improving our community,” said Ernest Burkeen Jr., director, Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks. “Recreation centers and parks provide a safe place for children to play and communities to gather. Support from companies like Constellation ensures that we are able to continue to offer this valuable service to the people of Baltimore.”

Earlier this year, Constellation, together with parent company Exelon and BGE, made a $200,000 donation to the Maryland Unites Fund and the Baltimore Community Foundation’s fund to support recovery efforts following unrest in the area. Today’s effort is part of the company’s continued commitment to building a stronger Baltimore and benefitting area residents.

Earlier this summer, the company joined the Urban Alliance to conduct mock job interviews with 200 Baltimore City high school students through a YouthWorks professional development program, and served as the lead sponsor of Wide Angle Youth Media’s STEM robotic film-making camp for inner city youth. Volunteers also gathered last week at the Crossroads School, where more than 65 Constellation employees serve as mentors, to repaint and decorate blackboards, organize and inventory library books, and assist teachers with classroom set-up and other prep work.
