New, Web-based Portal System Reduces Canada to U.S. Transit Times While Increasing Cross-Border Security
ANN ARBOR, Mich., April 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Con-Way Transportation Services, Inc., (Con-Way) a subsidiary of CNF Inc. (NYSE:CNF) today announced that its four less-than-truckload freight companies -- Con-Way Central Express, Con-Way Canada Express, Con-Way Southern Express and Con-Way Western Express have been certified by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for its Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) electronic manifest program.
ACE speeds the process of moving trucks and their freight from Canada into the U.S. by providing electronic cargo processing through a single, centralized, on-line access point that links CBP to certified shippers, carriers and eventually other federal agencies. The secure web portal is similar to a web site home page and pulls information from multiple CBP systems into a single, integrated system producing an electronic shipment manifest that is automatically filed with the CBP. This allows CBP officers to use one computer screen to release equipment, shipments and individuals into the United States. Previously seven different systems were needed to make the releases. The system also supports the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's goal of improving cross-border security.
"We invested $100,000 in IT systems and programs to be ACE certified and it is saving us and our customers significant time during border crossings. But also important to Con-Way is the contribution ACE makes to improving cross-border security which is of significant benefit to everyone," said David S. McClimon, president of Con-Way. McClimon estimated that the average time saved is between 30 and 90 minutes per load depending on the amount of cross- border traffic at the time.
