Energy company preparing for the jumpstart of solar development in Illinois

ComEd is sponsoring a three-day conference, The Fundamentals of Community Solar Design and Implementation, at the Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel from August 22 through August 24. Solar industry experts, community solar project developers, fellow energy companies and community-based solar advocates are participating in the workshop-style conference, which will address the basics of community solar design and how projects can be financed and implemented.

ComEd’s sponsorship of the conference is part of its commitment to supporting the integration of solar into the grid and the clean energy choices its customers want. The Next Generation Energy Plan, which was filed for consideration in Springfield this spring and is supported by ComEd and its sister company Exelon Generation, would jumpstart private rooftop solar development in Illinois, enabling the development of community solar and providing $250M in funding for low-income community solar.

“As we prepare for the growth of solar in Illinois, we are proud to be supporting the kind of learning and collaboration taking place at this EUCI conference,” said Fidel Marquez, senior vice president of Governmental and External Affairs, ComEd. “We regularly hear from and work with community partners who want to bring solar into their neighborhoods, so we are eager to learn with them from others who have successfully brought community solar projects to fruition.”

Topics that will be discussed by program participants include designing a community solar framework, the roles of utilities, solar developers and consumers, and identifying the metrics for success. The conference also incorporates a focus on low-income community solar, with a session highlighting models and tactics that have proven successful.

Several ComEd leaders and policy experts will be attending the conference, learning alongside local community leaders who will also be participating.
