Green Button Connect feature gives customers full control over sharing their energy use information with third parties

Beginning today, ComEd customers with smart meters will have the ability to authorize and share their energy usage data with registered third party companies who can help them pinpoint ways they can reduce energy consumption and save money.

ComEd is among the first utilities to roll-out Green Button Download My Data, which allows customers to download their own energy consumption data directly to their computer, and now it will be one of the first utilities in the Midwest to offer Green Button Connect My Data. The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC), which governs all Illinois utilities, recently approved a filing by ComEd for the Green Button Connect and now at the touch of a button, utility customers can automate the secure transfer of their energy usage data to authorized third parties. This type of access to information also gives ComEd customers the ability to use a wide variety of software and smartphone applications to control and manage their personal energy consumption.

“We are pleased to offer our customers the latest in data analytic technology bringing more opportunities for them to leverage their smart meters and manage daily electric usage,” said Val Jensen, senior vice president of customer operations for ComEd. “When the smart grid law was approved by the IL General Assembly in 2011, we made promises to improve the service we provide. Today, ComEd customers are enjoying record power reliability and they have greater insight and control over their own energy usage through smart meter-enabled programs like Green Button Connect. We are proud to deliver on yet another smart grid promise and look forward to continuing to deliver even more value to our customers in the future.”

The Citizens Utility Board Director, David Kolata supported the launch of this program and stated, "This is about empowering Illinois consumers to obtain the intelligence they need to maximize the benefits of the smart grid. Green Button Connect will help catapult Illinois to the national forefront of providing valuable data on electricity usage directly to consumers, and we’re hopeful this sparks entrepreneurs to develop services and apps that help lower our energy bills. This is good news for consumers and the green economy.”

Another supporter of Green Button Connect is the Environmental Defense Fund. “People want and deserve greater control over their energy use and electric bills,” said Andrew Barbeau, Senior Clean Energy Consultant for Environmental Defense Fund. “By embracing Green Button Connect and providing easy access to energy-use data, ComEd is handing its customers the keys to energy savings. Moreover, people maintain the freedom to choose whether to share their information with third party companies, which empowers customers to save money and cut pollution without sacrificing their privacy or security.”

The Green Button is a utility industry-led effort in response to a call to action from the White House to give utility customers access to information about their energy consumption in an easy, downloadable format.

“As we continue to install smart meters across ComEd’s our service territory, more and more of our customers – and eventually all – will have the ability to unlock even more value through data analytics,” said Jensen.
