75,000 Personally-Made Cards Being Sent
NEW YORK, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Channel One News is teaming up with the Army
National Guard and the non-profit AdoptaPlatoon(TM) program this holiday season
to enable middle and high school students around the country to send
personally-made greeting cards to American troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and
Kuwait.
Channel One News' "Operation Holiday Smile" initiative received an overwhelming
response from more than 800 schools wanting to participate in the program,
which was set up to accommodate 450 schools. Students in these 450 schools are
producing 75,000 cards for the troops. The cards will be adorned with patriotic
symbols and express gratitude for the sacrifices of service members. The cards
will be sent with candy canes to pre-designated unit commanders, who in turn
will distribute them to the soldiers.
Participating schools were recruited on the Channel One News program and via
the network's web site. Both will feature post-holiday photos and messages from
the troops.
"We are delighted to be able to play a role in helping to bring some holiday
cheer to our troops," said Kent Haehl, president, advertising sales and
marketing, Channel One News. "Our soldiers are defending freedom a long way
from home, and hopefully these cards will remind them that the youth of America
appreciate their commitment and sacrifice." Ida Hagg, director, AdoptAPlatoon, added: "We are thrilled to be partnering
with the Army National Guard and Channel One News for Operation Holiday Smile. This program has encouraged thousands of our nation's students to support our
deployed soldiers. We are thankful for every kindness that Operation Holiday
Smile makes possible for the troops." Alicia Wallace, media supervisor, LM&O Advertising, the Army National Guard's
agency, said: "The Army National Guard was very happy to support Channel One
News' Holiday Smile Program. America's deployed soldiers always look forward
to messages from home, especially during the holiday season. These notes from
the students help confirm that the sacrifices they are making are absolutely
appreciated and will help bring them a bit of the holiday spirit." The AdoptaPlatoon program is a non-profit organization that provides mail
support for U.S. troops and coordinates special projects for the holidays.
