BERLIN, N.J., Sept. 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Another year,
another birthday; getting older, and putting more candles on the
cake may make some reluctant to celebrate, but enjoying a birthday
is a milestone for some 11 million Americans who have a history of
cancer, including 2.5 million breast cancer survivors, according to
the American Cancer Society.
This fall, starting September 11,
back-to-school season means back to breast cancer awareness and
finding a cure, for at least one East coast retailer.
A.C. Moore Arts & Crafts,
Inc., (NASDAQ: ACMR) www.acmoore.com, 134 stores announce its joint
effort with the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against
Breast Cancer program created to celebrate breast cancer survivors,
educate people about how to reduce their breast cancer risk or find
the disease early, and raise funds to end breast cancer.
As part of the company's commitment to local customers, anyone
who visits any 134 A.C. Moore Arts & Crafts stores from
September 11 - October 22, can make a
donation to the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer program at
check out. As a special bonus, each store will hold a free
event on Saturday, Sept. 24 from
1 p.m. until 3 p.m. where
participants can "make and take" their own pony bead pink ribbon
pin, to signify awareness of breast cancer.
"We're starting our fundraising effort in conjunction with back
to school to generate maximum awareness and support for the
American Cancer Society efforts on early detection, and hopefully a
cure for breast cancer," said David
Abelman, A.C. Moore's Chief
Marketing and Merchandising Officer. "We are confident that our
customers and the crafting community, along with our associates,
will support this effort in a big way."
"We appreciate the support of A.C.
Moore for our Making Strides Against Breast Cancer effort,"
said Terry Music, chief mission
delivery officer for the American Cancer Society. "The funds
raised through Making Strides enable the Society to continue its
progress against the disease by fighting for every birthday
threatened by breast cancer in every community."
Funds raised through Making Strides will help the American
Cancer Society save lives and create more birthdays by helping
people stay well by taking steps to reduce breast cancer risk or
find it early; helping people get well by providing information and
support during and after a breast cancer diagnosis; by finding
cures through investment in groundbreaking breast cancer research;
and by fighting back by encouraging lawmakers to pass laws to
defeat breast cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join
the fight.
The campaign coincides with the American Cancer Society's Breast
Cancer Awareness Month in October, and gives customers an
opportunity to make a difference in the fight against breast
cancer.
