Blue Bell Creameries LP on Wednesday issued a voluntary recall on two flavors of its ice cream because of concerns they may be contaminated with listeria, a potentially deadly bacteria.

The Brenham, Texas-based company is recalling its Blue Bell Chocolate Cookie Dough and Blue Bell Cookie Two Step desserts distributed in 10 states because they contain pieces of chocolate chip cookie dough that could be contaminated, according to a company statement. The ingredient was supplied to Blue Bell by Aspen Hills, Inc.

"Blue Bell is initiating this recall out of an abundance of caution," the company said, noting that all the products in stores had passed its own pathogen testing program.

Blue Bell said it discovered a possible problem through internal testing, and that no illnesses have been reported. The ice-cream maker said it alerted Aspen Hills of a potential issue, and that the supplier has also issued a voluntary recall of its products.

The latest move comes after Blue Bell recalled all of its frozen desserts from grocery store shelves last year after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tied its ice cream to three deaths and multiple other illnesses.

Blue Bell has since resumed sales, though last year's recall forced the company to lay off or furlough much of its workforce and accept an emergency investment from Texas billionaire Sid Bass.

The U.S. Justice Department launched an investigation of Blue Bell's listeria outbreak. The status of the probe is unclear, and Blue Bell declined to comment on the matter Wednesday.
