LONDON--Barclays PLC (BARC.LN) Monday appointed Gerry Grimstone to succeed Michael Rake as senior independent director and deputy chairman from January.

Mr. Grimstone has been chairman of Standard Life PLC (SL.LN) since May 2007, having previously been appointed deputy chairman in March 2006.

Barclays shares at 1105 GMT were up 4 pence, or 1.9%, at 237 pence, valuing the company at GBP39.76 billion.
