BP PLC (BP) plans to begin repair work next week on the largest of three crude-distillation units at its 410,000-barrel-a-day Whiting, Ind., refinery, a source close to operations said Friday.

The work is related to a chemical-related problem with the 260,000-barrel-a-day CDU and may at times require a complete shutdown of the unit. The work could last a couple of weeks, the source said.

The timing of the CDU repair generally will coincide with a month or more of seasonal maintenance on the plant that could cut overall production rates by more than 50%, the source said.
