Arrow on IoT Data Visualization Demonstration
Arrow Electronics, Inc. (NYSE: ARW), Wireless Glue Networks and
OSIsoft showcased the power of the Internet of Things (IoT) today
at Dell World 2015 with a visualization of data streamed live from
Arrow’s Phoenix, Ariz. facility, including real-time energy usage
and asset security.
“This capability is a prime example of the value of IoT
technology—just imagine the cost-savings and efficiencies that
facilities managers all over the world could achieve with access to
similar data and visualization tools,” said Brian Armstrong, vice
president of Arrow’s OEM Computing Solutions business. “Arrow is
uniquely positioned to bring these types of integrated IoT
solutions to market.”
During the data visualization demonstration, Dell’s newly
announced purpose-built Edge Gateway 5000 Series, running Linux
Ubuntu OS and Wireless Glue’s SmartEdge software, streamed data
from Arrow’s 200,000-square-foot Phoenix facility to OSIsoft’s PI
System. Arrow’s Systems Integration business developed an
easy-to-view dashboard using the OSIsoft’s PI Coresight tool to
make the information accessible and viewable to anyone, anywhere in
the world.
“Data-driven facilities management will be the norm three to
five years from now,” said Matt Fagan, manager of Arrow’s Phoenix
facility. “It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of a company like
Arrow that is guiding tomorrow’s innovations forward today.”
IoT solutions like this, focused on data capture, analysis and
visualization to deliver a compelling return-on-investment for end
users, highlight Arrow’s core offerings in global components,
enterprise computing and systems integration. Arrow helps customers
assemble and integrate IoT solutions into their enterprise
organizations, and it also helps customers make sense of all the
valuable data they collect from their connected assets.
“It’s these types of capabilities that will enable pervasive
monitoring and utilization of data across industry and the
suppliers of those industries to deliver a connected world,” said
Martin Otterson, senior vice president of sales, marketing and
industry at OSIsoft. “With over 1.5 billion sensor-based data
streams already monitored by the PI System, PI System customers
will be able to complement their existing data with even more data
to improve real-time operational decision making, and support
advanced analytics for business and operational intelligence.”
“Wireless Glue Networks is excited to provide its SmartEdge
software to enable real-time read and write capabilities to
on-premise assets regardless of communication protocol,” said Peter
McCabe, CEO of Wireless Glue Networks. “We believe cost-effective
real-time measurement and verification is an essential first step
to driving the commercial and industrial IoT market.”
The Internet of Things refers to the concept of connecting any
device with an on/off switch to the Internet—this includes
everything from large industrial systems, pumps, turbines, to
mobile phones, coffee makers, lamps, wearable devices and even
plane engines and oil rigs. The analyst firm Gartner predicts that
by 2020 there will be over 26 billion connected devices, and the
research firm IDC predicts that the global IoT market will grow to
$1.7 trillion by 2020 as more devices come online and platforms and
services grow up around them.
