Appointment to the Advisory Panel
The Directors of World Life Sciences are pleased to announce the addition of
Dr. Michael E. J. Billingham to its Advisory Panel. Dr. Billingham is a senior research fellow at the University of Bristol
Veterinary School and is currently studying the molecular and cellular basis
of fibrotic disease within the department of medicine. He maintains an
extensive network of scientific collaborators worldwide, both practically and
for the sharing of unpublished information. Dr. Billingham is considered to
have an international reputation as a scientist having published over 80 peer
reviewed papers. Dr. Billingham qualified with a PhD. at Guy's Hospital Medical School studying
the response of the body to injury and the protective effects of proteins
produced by the liver that had anti-inflammatory properties. He gained pre and
post-doctoral experience in protein chemistry in the Department of Biological
Chemistry at University College London whilst working on anti-inflammatory
proteins and also at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR)
working on the discovery of Interleukin-1. Dr. Billingham joined ICI in 1971
to work with Dr. Arthur Walpole, the discoverer of Tamoxifen, and Dr. Jeff
Thorp who discovered Clofibrate, the first drug to lower cholesterol in man. In 1985 he was appointed to Eli Lilly to head up research in rheumatoid
arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA) and collaborated with a world leading
group on OA, based at the Kennedy Institute in London under Professor Helen
Muir, while also working on immunomodulatory drugs and novel treatments for
OA.
