WASHINGTON, Dec. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Students who live in
affordable, subsidized housing across the country are pursuing
their dreams of higher education with the help of scholarships
funded by Apartment Investment and Management Company
(Aimco). Aimco's 2014 donation of $130,000, raised in the company's 11th
Annual Aimco Cares Golf Classic, brings the company's total fund
contribution to $695,000 over five
consecutive years.
Members of Aimco's Washington,
D.C. Team joined Aimco Director of Communications
Cindy Lempke and major sponsors of
the golf tournament to present the contribution to Denise Muha, Executive Director of the National
Leased Housing Association, for the NLHA Education Fund which
administers the Aimco Cares Opportunity Scholarship. The check
presentation took place during the recent NLHA Fall Seminar at the
Washington, D.C. Marriott.
"We are so proud of our partnership with NLHA, and of the
promising young men and women who we have been able to support
through the Aimco Cares Opportunity Scholarship. These
amazing students are passionate about their education and focused
on creating a bright future for themselves and their families,"
said Patti Shwayder, Aimco Senior
Vice President of Government Relations and Communications.
"The Aimco Cares Opportunity Scholarship reflects Aimco's corporate
citizenship values, and commitment to education. We're
pleased to 'give back' to these deserving students, some of whom
we've had the privilege of helping for several consecutive
years."
The scholarships are awarded based on financial need, scholastic
merit, community leadership and volunteerism.
"Aimco Cares has been pivotal to the growth and success of the
NLHA's Education Fund which makes a critical difference in whether
a student in affordable housing can go to college," said
Muha. "Some 200 low-income students over the past five years
have had the opportunity to attend college, due in large part to
the support of Aimco."
More than 120 golfers participated in the 2014 charity
tournament with more than 75 companies providing sponsorships to
raise funds for the event which was held in July at Sanctuary Golf
Course in Sedalia, Colorado. Diamond sponsors contributing at
least $30,000, were Jones Lang LaSalle, RentPath and
IPA. Platinum sponsors, contributing at least
$20,000, were Apartment Finder and
Harris Winick, LLP.
In addition to the scholarship fund, this year's tournament
co-beneficiaries are the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors,
which provides a network of support services for families who have
lost a loved one in the line of duty, and Project Sanctuary, a
nonprofit that helps military personnel reconnect with their
families when they return from military service.
