ARM and Tencent Games today announced a strategic partnership aimed at enriching mobile gamers’ graphic experiences. Through this partnership, Tencent mobile game developers will gain access to a wide range of leading-edge hardware, tools and expertise. This will enable the development of games that efficiently deliver superior 2D and 3D graphic experiences including the most complex geometries, richer textures and faster frame rates. As a result of the collaboration, gamers in China will benefit from an improved mobile gaming experience.

“ARM and Tencent Games share a mutual vision of providing mobile gamers with an experience that surpasses console-class gaming performance,” said Dennis Laudick, vice president, partner marketing, media processing group, ARM. “Through our collaboration Tencent’s mobile game developers will not only have access to the latest ARM®-based hardware but also resources to help them optimize their games for maximum performance in a mobile power envelope. In addition, our collaboration will provide ARM with detailed input on next-generation gaming applications that will influence future ARM-based SoCs and developer tools.”

The partnership with Tencent Games will provide Tencent’s mobile game developers with:

  • Access to the latest developer boards based on high-performance ARM Cortex® CPUs and ARM Mali™ GPUs
  • Guidelines for developing mobile games on ARM-based solutions that address compatibility and performance challenges
  • Access to engineering resources from Tencent R&D Game Studios and the ARM ecosystem

“Tencent Games is committed to cultivating growth and innovation within the field of mobile gaming while ensuring consistency and compatibility among the increasingly diverse offerings of mobile devices in the marketplace,” said Steve Nie, general manager, R&D department, Tencent Games. “Combining Tencent’s broad experience in the mobile game development space with ARM’s leading position in the semiconductor IP space for CPU and GPU technology will ensure that developers can achieve high performance across the widest range of platforms.”

ARM based platforms continue to be a major focus for developers, particularly in the large and dynamic Chinese market. In May of last year, ARM announced an ongoing collaboration with Chukong Technologies to support the optimization of Cocos-2dx based applications. In December 2014, Chukong Technologies announced the integration of ARM DS-5 Streamline toolchain into the Cocos Code IDE. This was followed in February 2015, when ARM announced that ARM Mali GPU technology was the world’s best-selling licensable GPU IP in 2014.

More information on the ARM and Tencent Games collaboration will be available at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) this week at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Additionally, several of ARM’s mobile gaming partners will be showcased within the ARM booth (#1624) at GDC.

Guidelines for mobile game developers will be available in the second half of 2015 at http://malideveloper.arm.com and Tencent Games site.
