MELBOURNE, Australia--AMP Ltd. (AMP.AU) has elected former investment banker and corporate lawyer Catherine Brenner as its chairman.

Ms. Brenner, who succeeds outgoing Chairman John Palmer from Friday, said the financial services company's board expected to make additional appointments to broaden the collective background, skills and perspective of directors.

An AMP board member since June 2010, Ms. Brenner also is a director of bottling company Coca-Cola Amatil Ltd. (CCL.AU) and building products supplier Boral Ltd. (BLD.AU).

Mr. Palmer stepped in as interim chairman of AMP in late April, postponing his planned retirement from the company's board, after Simon McKeon said he was stepping down from the post at the annual shareholders meeting in May following an undisclosed change in his circumstances.
