International stocks trading in New York closed lower on Wednesday.

ASML Holding NV (ASML, ASML.AE) was among the companies with ADRs that traded actively.

The BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts fell 2% to 113.63. The European index decreased 1.8% to 113.94, the Asian index dropped 2.6% to 122.45, the Latin American index fell 1.7% to 125.61 and the emerging markets index declined 1.9% to 190.64.

ASML said it planned to buy back an additional one billion euros ($1.09 billion) of its shares as it reported record sales for 2015. The Dutch semiconductor-equipment maker, whose customers include large chip makers such as Intel Corp. (INTC) and Samsung Electronics Co. (005930.SE), has also raised its dividend 50%. ADRs of ASML rose 6.2% to $85.26.

Posco (PKX, 05490.SE), the world's fifth-largest steelmaker by output, is expected to post its first-ever annual loss when it reports results on Jan. 28, analysts say. Fourth-quarter operating profit and revenue are also widely expected to miss expectations due to a sharp drop in prices. ADRs fell 3.7% to $32.42.

A unit of UBS Group AG (UBS) said it will "mandatorily" redeem outstanding notes of two leveraged exchange-traded products that are linked to energy companies amid a sharp selloff in the sector. ADRs fell 2.6% to $16.43.
