ABB Ltd. has been awarded a $90 million contract from Statoil to
supply an electricity cable that will provide power produced
onshore to the giant Johan Sverdrup field being developed in the
North Sea.
The Norwegian government is keen for oil companies operating in
the region to use power generated onshore to power offshore
developments due to the high levels of carbon dioxide and nitrogen
oxide emitted by traditional fossil fuel powered generators built
on platforms.
Zurich-based ABB, the world's largest maker of power grids, will
manufacture and install the 200 kilometer cable that will provide
power from the Norwegian power grid onshore.
