202 Others Injured in Highway Incidents Investigated by Troopers
HARRISBURG, Pa., March 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Fourteen people were killed and 202 others were injured in 508 crashes investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police during the three-day Easter holiday driving period, Commissioner Jeffrey B. Miller said today.
Miller said 11 of those killed were not wearing seat belts. Fifty-two of the 508 crashes, including four of the fatal crashes, were alcohol-related.
The official three-day Easter driving period covered Friday, March 21, through Sunday, March 23. During that period, state police issued 4,467 speeding citations, charged 209 people with driving under the influence, cited 205 for not wearing seat belts and issued citations to 34 motorists for not securing children in safety seats.
During last year's Easter holiday driving period, which covered April 6-8, one person was killed and 209 others were injured in 628 crashes investigated by state police.
Also last year, troopers cited 2,995 drivers for speeding, charged 236 people with driving under the influence, cited 187 for not wearing seat belts and issued citations to 27 motorists for not securing children in safety seats.
Miller said the numbers cover only those crashes investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police and do not include statistics on incidents to which other law-enforcement agencies responded.
