Students receive hands-on experience in preparation for becoming veterinary technicians and veterinary assistants

VCA Animal Hospitals, with more than 650 veterinary hospitals in 41 states, the District of Columbia and 4 Canadian provinces, announced an expanded partnership with Penn Foster, a leader in career-focused online and hybrid education with a commitment to addressing the middle-skills gap in America.

In addition to the practicum experience previously offered, Penn Foster’s veterinary assistant students will now be able to participate in VCA externships to gain hands on experience and training. VCA is also offering a number of Penn Foster scholarships to its employees who want to make their dream of becoming a registered veterinary technician a reality.

“As the need for veterinary assistants and veterinary technicians continues to increase, so does the requirement for qualified professionals who can assist our veterinarians in hospitals across North America,” said VCA Vice President, Professional Relations and Knowledge Development, Dr. Jill Clark. “We welcome the opportunity to work more closely with Penn Foster’s veterinary academy students, who have a reputation for excellence in these competitive fields.”

“It is critically important for our veterinary academy students to get the practical education they need to succeed in the workforce, and we’re pleased Penn Foster students will be learning by working alongside outstanding professionals at VCA,” said Dr. Jim Hurrell, director of the veterinary academy at Penn Foster. “This enhanced partnership will open up many opportunities for our students and enable them to secure externships that will further their education and ultimately, their veterinary careers.”

The VCA clinical experience provides opportunities to qualified veterinary assistant and veterinary technician students for observation and practice experience in a hospital environment under the supervision of trained professionals. As part of this agreement, VCA facilities make every effort to provide opportunities for students to perform, while under the direct supervision of a credentialed veterinary technician or licensed veterinarian, health care tasks for practical training in both fields of study. The agreement also provides a discounted tuition for VCA employees who are interested in furthering their career.
