(DAL) has overtaken American Airlines as the world's largest carrier by traffic, according to new industry rankings for 2010 released Tuesday. The consolidation of Northwest Airlines following the completion of Delta's takeover sees the Atlanta-based carrier leapfrog rivals to become the largest carrier of passenger and freight traffic, including domestic and international services. Dubai-based Emirates remained the world's largest carrier measured by international traffic, according to the annual survey compiled by the International Air Transport Association and released at its annual meeting. Emirates ranked ahead of Deutsche Lufthansa AG (LHA.XE) and Delta, though Air France-KLM (AF.FR) would have ranked first had its two main operating units been combined. Delta was the largest domestic carrier, ahead of Southwest Airlines Co. (LUV) and American, a unit of AMR Corp. (AMR).
