Gannett Names MarketWatch's Callaway As Editor-in-Chief of USA Today

By Chelsea Stevenson Gannett Co. (GCI) named David Callaway, the editor-in-chief of Dow Jones & Co.'s MarketWatch, as editor-in-chief of USA Today. Mr. Callaway will assume the position later this month and will oversee the content strategy of the newspaper and assist in the digital transition of its newsroom. The appointment will see him rejoin Larry Kramer, who founded MarketWatch and was previously its chairman and chief executive. Mr. Kramer is now president and publisher of USA Today. Last November, the search for a new editor-in-chief began as John Hillkirk left the position he held for more than two years. Mr. Hillkirk has remained at the newspaper as senior editor, investigations and national enterprise. "[Mr. Callaway's] expertise in both new and traditional media will be a tremendous asset as we transform our iconic brand into one that delivers unique content in new and creative ways," Mr. Kramer said. Mr. Callaway has held the position at MarketWatch and its predecessor CBS MarketWatch since 2003. He previously served as executive editor and managing editor and also worked at Bloomberg News and was a columnist at the Boston Herald. Dow Jones is part of News Corp. (NWS, NWSA) and is publisher of this newswire. Gannett's first-quarter earnings fell due to restructuring costs and an ongoing slide in print advertising revenue. The decline was posted two months after the company launched new efforts to focus on digital operations. Shares were recently up 0.5% at $14.73. The stock is down roughly 10% year to date.
