Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. unveiled plans Thursday to launch
an online streaming service later this year focused on Comic-Con
International, the latest move by the U.S. production studio to
reel in so-called "cord-cutters."
Lions Gate said the subscription video-on-demand service will
offer short-form content, films and television series meant to
appeal to the "diverse interests of Comic-Con's fan base." It will
also offer archived footage from Comic-Con's 45-year history.
This will be Lions Gate's third streaming service.
Last year, Lions Gate teamed up with Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.
to make available on Alibaba set-top boxes offerings such as the
"Twilight" hit vampire movie series and the TV show "Mad Men."
It also plans to launch the Tribeca Shortlist, a service
targeted at film-lovers, this summer.
The move comes as consumers shift away from traditional cable
models and spend more time watching subscription streaming-video
services like those from Netflix Inc., Hulu and Amazon.com Inc.
Earlier this week, Time Warner Inc. said its stand-alone
streaming service HBO Now is available to users of Apple Inc.
products and customers of Cablevision Systems Corp.'s Optimum
Online.
Meanwhile, back in January, Dish Network Corp. launched Sling
TV, the first service to live-stream major sports, news and other
traditionally pay-TV shows without being tethered to a cable
subscription.
