(DISH) is negotiating a new carriage renewal deal with ESPN, and is objecting to passing along big fee hikes from sports providers to its satellite-TV customers, The New York Post reported Thursday, citing people with knowledge of the talks. Thursday, ESPN announced a $15.2 billion, eight-year rights extension deal with the NFL for "Monday Night Football," paying a reported 73% increase over its existing deal. Cable, satellite and telecom companies are anticipating steep fee increases after ESPN's new NFL deal. Dish wants ESPN owner Walt Disney Co. (DIS) to offer the sports network on a separate tier from its basic package so that non-sports fans aren't penalized, the report said.
