Citrix Technology Provides Students with Access
to the Educational Applications They Need on Chromebooks
The widespread use of mobile devices on campuses and the need
for more personalized learning are changing how students learn and
how classes are taught. Educational institutions and school
districts are eager to implement the latest technology, but
typically do not have significant infrastructure and funding
resources available. That’s why they are looking for solutions to
move teaching and learning into the digital world 1. Maine Township
High School District in Chicago, educating 6,500 culturally diverse
students and recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in the
National Secondary School Recognition Program, has created a
dramatically more efficient school day for teachers and students
using Citrix solutions.
Maine Township’s IT department was able to purchase new
Chromebooks, as well as all of the Citrix software needed to
virtualize the latest Windows-based solutions. The IT organization
collaborated extensively with Google experts over a three-month
period to create a cloud-based infrastructure integrated with
XenDesktop, NetScaler and Google Apps for Education. As a result,
students now work like they will in college by using the most
current software available on Chromebooks. For example, as schools
nationwide gradually adopt the model of requiring students to
submit homework electronically via Google Docs, integrating with
this technology is essential.
The new environment created with Citrix solutions also empowers
more than 700 teachers to access a consistent desktop environment,
with solutions that are always up-to-date and user friendly.
Because all faculty members see the same applications and desktop
regardless of the device or browser they use, training and support
have been dramatically simplified and streamlined. As a result,
instead of spending 85 percent of their time supporting desktop
machines, the IT team can focus on helping students and teachers
improve their skills and achieve their classroom goals.
Quotes
Jonathan Urbanski, Network Manager, Maine Township
“The new Citrix-enabled environment provides teachers with easy
access. Teachers need to be able to expect classroom technology to
work just as easily as writing on a chalkboard does. By making the
technology environment more reliable, we free up people to create
and innovate.”
Nicole Nesrsta, Educational Vertical Solutions Marketing
Manager, Citrix
“The rapid evolution of technology is changing the way we learn,
work and educate. Students want the freedom to learn and study
using the latest software or applications on any device, in the
location where they feel most productive and inspired. Maine
Township’s use of technology to empower new ways of working is an
excellent example of how Citrix technology is helping to change
education for students.”
