According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics employment of social workers is expected to grow 19 percent from 2012 to 2022, resulting in over 114,000 new jobs*. To meet this demand, Capella University has expanded and enhanced its array of graduate degree offerings with the recent addition of a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree. The curriculum for the Capella MSW is aligned to Council on Social Work Education standards and involves online coursework, a credit-bearing residency, and fieldwork, which is the signature pedagogy of social work. Capella University (http://www.capella.edu) is a regionally accredited online university* that offers online degree programs designed to help working adults advance in their careers.

“Social workers help people navigate some of life’s most difficult challenges, including poverty, discrimination, abuse, addiction, unemployment, and mental illness,” Capella President Scott Kinney said. “Capella’s MSW program will equip the next generation of social workers with the skills, tools and knowledge they need to help meet the pressing national demand for social work professionals with advanced technology and leadership skills.”

Capella is one of only a few universities to offer an online Master of Social Work degree. The university is currently seeking program accreditation from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), the sole accrediting agency for social work education in the United States.

The Capella MSW is comprised of two programs—a foundation program for candidates without a CSWE-accredited bachelor’s degree in social work and an advanced-standing program for those who already possess a CSWE-accredited bachelor’s degree. Both programs involve supervised fieldwork and coursework that prepares students for success in social work, with an emphasis on leadership training and use of technology in social work practice.

“Capella’s MSW gives students the opportunity to obtain a professionally aligned degree at a competitive price, without being tied to a specific physical location or having to meet an inflexible schedule,” said Brian Christenson, PhD, DSW program chair and MSW program director.

Capella MSW students also benefit from participation in a residency program and in fieldwork aligned with their specific area of interest. “The five-day residency gives students an opportunity to interact one-on-one and in group settings with faculty and fellow program participants,” Christenson said. “The field experience exposes them to situations similar to those they might encounter in the workplace.”

Capella will begin admitting students in the program in the fall of 2015.
