Governor Scott and Volunteer Florida President Chester Spellman
presented the award to Comcast at the governor’s cabinet meeting in
Tallahassee on April 14.
“It’s an honor to be selected for this award, particularly
during Florida Volunteer Month in April and with Comcast Cares Day,
our company’s annual celebration of our year-round commitment to
service, right around the corner on April 25th,” said Derek Cooper,
Vice President of Government Affairs and Community Investment for
Comcast’s Florida Region. “These efforts wouldn’t be possible
without our dedicated employees and the great relationships we’ve
established with our community partners around the state as we work
together to support Florida’s local communities.”
Comcast Cares Day, the largest single-day corporate volunteer
event in the country, began in 2001 and takes place annually in
April. This year in Florida, more than 120 community service
projects are planned in communities from the Panhandle down to the
Florida Keys on Saturday, April 25. In 2014, more than 7,300
Florida Comcast employees and their family and friends and
community volunteers participated in Comcast Cares Day.
In 2014, across Florida, Comcast awarded more than $1 million in
grants, donations and scholarships, which includes:
- Leaders and Achievers Scholarships to
high school seniors
- Matching Comcast Cares Day grants to
nonprofit community partners
- Comcast Foundation grants to nonprofit
community partners to support programs aimed at expanding digital
literacy, promoting community service, and building tomorrow’s
leaders
- Grants that funded the creation of 10
Internet Essentials Digital Learning Zones in Florida where
networks of non-profit partners are working together to enhance
public Internet access and increase family-focused digital literacy
training and education
These Digital Learning Zones are a part of Comcast’s efforts to
bridge the digital divide through Internet Essentials, the
company’s nationally acclaimed broadband adoption program. Since
the Internet Essentials program was established in 2011, Comcast
has connected 62,500 Florida families or 250,000 low income
Floridians – more than in any other state.
In partnership with Volunteer Florida for Florida Volunteer
Month in April, Comcast is currently airing a new video public
service announcement (PSA) to promote volunteerism in its markets
throughout the state. Throughout 2014 in Florida, Comcast provided
more than $7.3 million in support to nonprofit organizations
through production and airing of PSA’s.
