The Civic 50 and Points of Light honors Apollo
Education Group
Apollo Education Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: APOL), has been recognized
as one of the nation’s most community-minded companies as part of
the Civic 50, an initiative of Points of Light, the largest
organization in the world dedicated to volunteer service. The award
celebrates those who set the standard for corporate civic
engagement and seek to best use their time, talent, and resources
to improve the quality of life in the communities where they do
business. This is the fourth time Points of Light has recognized
Apollo Education Group since the award’s inception in 2012.
“We are proud to be recognized by Civic 50 as a company that
leads the way in corporate civic engagement,” said Greg Cappelli,
chief executive officer, Apollo Education Group, Inc. “Our culture
at Apollo Education Group is profoundly rooted in giving back to
our communities and spreading our passion for improving the
world.”
As a responsible corporate partner, Apollo Education Group
creates opportunities that are centered on education and workplace
readiness, employee volunteerism and healthy communities. Through
its educational subsidiaries, Apollo Education Group offers
scholarship programs providing access to much-needed education
opportunities as well as a strong employee, student and alumni
volunteer force helping individuals become better learners and
workers. The company also provides its community partners with
in-kind donations and donations of technological resources, as well
as consulting assistance to help further the goals and missions of
their organizations.
“We are at the beginning of a boom in corporate social
responsibility,” said Neil Bush, chairman of the board of Points of
Light. “Corporations are putting policies in place that prioritize
connection with communities. They’re seeing a positive effect
through meaningful engagement with community members, increases in
employee satisfaction and morale, and positive feedback from
consumers.”
Apollo Education Group’s subsidiary University of Phoenix and
its partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) is a
perfect example of these efforts. The organizations, both believing
that education is the foundation to strengthening families and
communities, have a long-standing relationship centered on
providing children and parents the resources they need to build
better futures through education. In 2015, University of Phoenix
staff, faculty, students and alumni across campuses nationwide
collected more than 20,500 supplies in support of the BGCA Back to
School Drive to help BGCA children have the resources they need for
a successful school year.
Each year, Civic 50 honors the 50 most community-minded
companies in the nation as determined by an annual survey. The
findings are culminated in a report that showcases the companies’
best practices in engaging their communities.
Leading researchers, industry thought leaders and corporate
advisors provided strategic guidance on the development of the
survey. This year’s Civic 50 applicants were evaluated and accrued
points based on several criteria, including the quantity and impact
of financial and human resources applied to civic improvement,
whether internal and external resources are activated to maximize
community impact, how a company’s community engagement activities
support its business interests, how broadly community engagement is
supported and institutionalized within a company’s policies,
systems and incentives, and how a company measures the social and
business value of its community engagement programs.
The survey was administered by True Impact, a company
specializing in helping organizations maximize and measure their
social and business value. The survey instrument consisted of
quantitative and multiple-choice questions that inform the Civic 50
scoring process. The Civic 50 is the only survey and ranking system
that exclusively measures corporate involvement in communities.
