to deliver keynote address
Carnegie Learning, Inc., a subsidiary of Apollo Education Group,
Inc. (NASDAQ: APOL), announced today that its Cofounder and
Chief Scientist, Steve Ritter, Ph.D., will be a keynote speaker at
the National Council of Local Administrators Best Practices and
Innovations in Career and Technical Education Conference in
Glendale, Ariz., Sept. 23 through 25, 2015.
The conference provides participants with an opportunity to hear
from Career and Technical Education (CTE) leaders from across the
country regarding integrating the Common Core into CTE classrooms,
business and industry partnerships, classroom management and other
topics. Dr. Ritter’s session is titled “Getting Real About Math.”
It will focus on the importance of mathematics knowledge and the
skills that are most in demand including deep knowledge of concepts
like number sense and the ability to think through non-routine
problem solving.
“To prepare students to practice the cognitive skills that
enable non-routine problem solving, we need to understand the
process that people use to solve complex problems,” said Dr.
Ritter. “My keynote will review examples of both successful and
unsuccessful mathematical problem solving in the real world and
connect to the kinds of reasoning that we need to encourage in
school instruction.”
Additionally, Carnegie Learning Manager of School Partnerships
Jami Koustik will conduct a breakout session, titled “Career-Ready
Thinkers and Problem Solvers,” which will feature an in-depth
discussion on how to successfully help prepare students for careers
by shifting how math is taught and learned in the classroom to
align with skills required in today’s jobs. Koustik is a seasoned
mathematics instructor and former chemist. As a former math
coordinator at Amphitheater Public Schools in Arizona, Koustik was
part of the initial implementation of the Carnegie Learning
curriculum and professional development to support collaborative
classrooms.
Dr. Ritter was instrumental in the development and evaluation of
Cognitive Tutor® for mathematics, a two-time SIAA CODiE™ Award
Winner. Additionally, he is the author of numerous papers on the
design, architecture and evaluation of Intelligent Tutoring
systems. He is lead author of an evaluation judged by the US
