NPD DisplaySearch: Apple Remains Leader In Mobile PC Market

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES Apple Inc. (AAPL) maintained its market share lead in in the mobile PC sector during the first quarter, driven by continued strong sales of its iPad tablet, according to research firm NPD Group. Overall shipments of mobile PCs were 76.2 million units in the period, a seasonal drop of 15% from the fourth quarter of last year. However, shipments were up 30% year-to-year as tablet PC volume more than doubled and shipments of notebooks and mini-notebooks were up 12%. Apple's growth was fueled by iPad sales, allowing it to capture a 22.5% share of the mobile PC market--more than double that of rival Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ), which maintained its lead in the notebook and mini-notebook segment with a 16.2% share. Apple continued to dominate the tablet market, with a market share of 62.8%. Nearly 80% of Apple's mobile PC shipments were tablets--more than doubling during the quarter to 13.6 million units. Samsung Electronics Co. (005930.SE, SSNHY) regained the No. 2 spot in the tablet segment as its Europe/Middle East and Africa segment saw the strongest results. Inc. (AMZN), maker of the Kindle brand, fell to No. 3 from No. 2. Research-in-Motion Ltd. (RIMM, RIM.T) and Asustek Computer Inc. (2357.TW, ASUUY) jumped back into the top five rankings after weak results in the previous quarter, while Nook maker Barnes & Noble Inc.
