Apple Music now costs half as much for students as it does for the rest of us. On Friday, Apple Inc. began offering Apple Music to college and university students at a monthly subscription price of $4.99.

Apple will verify a student's active status (at any degree level) using a service called Unidays, which lets students create an online account to get discounts across various major retailers and brands, Levi's, Zipcar, American Apparel, Microsoft and Urban Outfitters.

During the Unidays sign-up process, students are prompted to log in with their university email address. Once Unidays has verified student status, the Apple Music discount can kick in for an existing Apple ID used during the Apple Music sign-up process. So, if you already have an Apple ID and are a student, you won't have to create a new Apple ID to get this discount. And, if you're a student who hasn't used up the free three-month trial that Apple Music offers, you'll still get the first three months of the service free before payments kick in.

The 50% student discount brings Apple's streaming music service in line with Spotify and Tidal, both of which already offer $4.99 student subscriptions. Google Play Music offers no discount for students, just the industry-standard $9.99 a month. All four rival services do offer family plans, where multiple users can share a subscription at a starting price of $14.99 a month. But the number varies by service: While Apple's family plan covers up to six people for that price, Spotify charges $4.99 for each additional family member.

Apple's student plan is available right now in the U.S., U.K., Germany, Denmark, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, and it is available to students only for up to four years. So, if you end up being a fifth-year senior in college, you'll have to pay full price before graduation day. Spotify's student discount, on the other hand, lasts only 12 months.
