I'm up +0.021% on the day today (FTSE100 +0.239%), but down -1.12% on the week (FTSE100 -1.25%) and up +0.18% YTD (FTSE100 +2.10% and HIX +2.77%.

Best rises: UU. +1.52%, IMB +1.46% and HLN +1.43%.

Worst falls: SMDS -10.26%, KGF -1.05% and S32 -0.88%.

SMDS fell sharply after Mondi decided not to pursue their bid, and IPC's price had fallen. I trimmed back SMDS last week at 412.7, fortunately.

I swept the drive this morning, so now have 9 bags to go to the dump in the morning. WSCC make you book a slot these days, so I have 11.00.

6/7 on the quiz, which is a record for me. I only knew one answer.

Enjoy the weekend.

+0.8%. FRES at +3% still does not appear to be keeping up with PM prices.

The sun was powerful enough to overcome the cold wind in the morning but it was very cold under afternoon clouds bringing hail. Did better than I expected on a sunny bike ride - helped by properly inflating tyres - but hurting afterwards from the supposed "scar tissue" so it is not seem to be settling down. 12.6C after 2.5C.

Didn't want a lot at SBRY today but 4 out of stocks meant I spent possibly 15-20% less than I would have. That's really bad for business. Yet another couple of items rose in price. Is that the new minimum wage in action?

BA., top riser, share price target lifted by Deutsche Bank.
INVP, worst faller, no idea why.

On the week : +0.40%.
Share of the week : PLUS +9.1%, was a new year tip from SCSW.
Fallers of the week, xd's take your pick : PHNX, AV.,CSN.
Folio YTD -1.3%.

Enjoy the better weather, will try and get to Trent Bridge tomorrow, v Worc.

Cracking week for me despite a couple of significant ex-dividends. FRES up strongly again today - arguably not keeping up with PM prices but they are full of traders and prone to sharp reversals so might well not stick. +1.1% today. YTD -2.8%. (Sorry, Skinny!)

Similar to yesterday. High cloud prevented much direct sunlight but still warm. Managed to dry another load of washing despite not feeling great. A modest shopping trip to SBRY saw another couple of small price rises and lots of "more mature" customers impeding progress. At least they have more time so are friendlier. 20.1C after 11.0C.

Have a good weekend.

EU gas storage has bottomed at 58.3% from a peak of 98.6% - a fall of 40.3%. Shouldn't we paying lower than historic prices if we are awash with the stuff?

Next observation, if we are awash with it and prices are so low that wells are being closed for maintenance, or just closed, and drilling postponed, then isn't there only one way for the gas price to go in future as supply dwindles and cheaper prices increase demand (particularly in the Far East apparently)?

Portfolio -0.2% mainly all down to big falls for RS1 and RSW plus ULVR and SMIN........gains for SHEL, GRG, MKS and VOD.

The sun came out for ten minutes at 4pm, other than that overcast all day with morning showers 13C.

Sainsburys this morning very busy. Prices definitely on the up again across the board. One good offer was beef joints at half price - left over from Easter I suppose. So grabbed a few of those for the freezer.

2 X £100 Ernie wins for my wife.

Wok night tonight. Stifry chicken , crunchy veg, noodles , oyster sauce...plus a glass or two of red wine :-)

Good morning. Late start today. Floor more dry than wet for a change. No sun yet.

These new experimental employment numbers look to be churning out garbage. The big rise in unemployment and small fall in long term sick is now a small rise in unemployment and a big rise in long term sick. Which is it? And they look worse if you dig:

There are 393k/+0.7% more people aged 16+ than a year ago yet the total hours they worked was completely unchanged at +0.0m/+0.0% hours. UK employed -312k/-1.2%. Non-UK employed +405k/+6.3% of which EU -15k/-0.7%. Inactive +120k/+1.3%. Long term sick +217k/+8.4%. Inactive wanting job +73k/+4.1%.

Average energy price compared to last year:

System Average Price (SAP) of gas

In the week to 4 February 2024, the System Average Price (SAP) of gas increased by 4% when compared with the previous week. However, this was 52% lower than the equivalent week of 2023.

Our accompanying System Average Price of gas dataset is available.
System Price of electricity

In the week to 4 February 2024, the System Price of electricity decreased by 8% when compared with the previous week and was 62% lower than the equivalent week of 2023.

I'm getting fed up with this bug. That two week sniffle turned into a burning sinus infection at night on Friday. It's not inhibiting as yet but my chest is starting to feel a bit sore this morning. I've only just rid of the lesser aftereffects of Covid. We need better weather!

VOD results tomorrow, says a lot that I tend to read them behind my fingers, can't remember the last time they issued results and the share price rose. Going to get a lot colder this week,

UK domestic banks seem to be Quasi-Government agencies these days. No wonder their share prices are so low.

Still, a 13Bn boost to the economy just prior to an election is a decent sized rabbit for Hunt to pull out of the hat.

Thanks for the share suggestions of those companies in the Financial Sector.
Held both HSBA & AV. for ages, but sold out before Covid and reinvested elsewhere.

Briefly held PHNX - but didn't time my buys and sells that well, on that one!

CSN is another one I like, share price never seems to do much, but has a nice 8% yield.
