International stocks trading in New York closed lower Tuesday. The BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts fell 0.68% to 145.64. The European index declined 0.68% to 143.50, the Asian index dropped 0.74% to 152.09, the Latin American index edged down 0.31% to 222.81 and the emerging markets index fell 0.75% to 265.48. Among the companies with shares that actively traded was Barclays PLC (BCS, BARC.LN).

Barclays PLC (BCS, BARC.LN) raised its provision for potential foreign-exchange settlements to GBP1.25 billion ($1.92 billion), leading it to report a full-year net loss, but it said an effort to shrink and restructure its business is starting to pay off. Shares fell 2.6% to $15.66.

Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSA, RDSA.LN) gave shareholders the option of receiving a dividend via company stock, known as a scrip dividend, a move that other large oil companies have made as cash dries up during a period of low oil prices. Shell reported a fourth-quarter profit of more than $4 billion but said that, after oil prices dropped by nearly 50% in 2014, it wouldn't be able to raise its dividend of 47 cents per ordinary share from the previous quarter. Shares fell 1.6% to $63.30.
