Canada-based Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd. (NDM.T) has appointed Rejean Carrier as chief operating officer of the Pebble Partnership, the massive gold and copper deposit in Alaska.

Carrier is a geological engineer with 35 years of relevant project experience, having worked on numerous multi-billion dollar development projects in nickel, aluminum, iron ore, concrete and power generation, Northern Dynasty said late Thursday.

Most recently, he was site director and deputy project director of Xstrata PLC's (XTA.LN) Konaimbo Nickel in New Caledonia, where he managed the construction of a $5 billion nickel operation including mine and mill-site development port infrastructure, and a 350 megawatt power plant.

The Pebble project is jointly owned in equal measure by U.K.-listed Anglo American PLC (AAL.LN) and Northern Dynasty. Rio Tinto PLC (RIO) owns 19.16% in Northern Dynasty.

The Pebble Partnership is currently working to complete a prefeasibility study in 2012 and initiate project permitting for the Pebble Project, which could produce annually as much as 350,000 metric tons of copper, 12,000 tons of molybdenum and 600,000 troy ounces of gold.

The project partners have invested more than $500 million in the project to date.
