Independent broker-dealer offers learning opportunities from peers, experts

Securities America, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ladenburg Thalmann Financial Services Inc. (NYSE MKT: LTS), announced its fall lineup of educational events for advisors and their staff.

“Professional development for advisors and their assistants creates better teams and stronger businesses,” said Kirk Hulett, executive vice president of strategy and practice management at Securities America. “By combining our thought leadership with the real-world experiences of their peers, we give advisors training they can really implement to grow their practice.”

Technology Road Shows

Recognizing that advisors and assistants learn in multiple ways, Securities America takes its technology training on the road to help advisors and their staff get the greatest efficiency possible. The company’s field technology training specialists will be in Denver on Sept. 30 and Chicago on Oct. 1, with additional dates to be added throughout the fall and winter.

“We provide web-based modules, conference calls, quick cards, videos and articles to help our advisors make the most of Securities America’s technology,” Hulett said. “The roadshows add that personal, hands-on approach for those who learn best in that format. Our summer roadshows maxed out room capacity in every city, so our advisors see real value in spending their time or their staff’s time on learning more than the basics of the technology so they can streamline their office processes and maximize their efficiency.”

Masters Series Study GroupsFor a sixth consecutive year, Securities America will offer two sections of this study group for advisors who qualify for the company’s incentive program. The groups will meet concurrently Oct. 13-16 in Philadelphia. The format of the meeting is based on proven techniques of the most successful industry study groups. Advisors participate in facilitated discussions of business growth strategies, marketing, prospecting and business management best practices. Individual advisors can bring specific business challenges to the group for help problem solving.

NextPhase Retirement Income Distribution ConferenceSecurities America will host its NextPhase Retirement Income Distribution Conference Nov. 2-3 at Amelia Island, Fla. This two-day conference is for advisors who focus on clients 50-70 years old entering into retirement. Topics include how to create an income distribution plan, selecting products to fit, presenting the plan, and how to track success of the plan. Guest speakers will cover relevant income distribution planning topics such as Social Security and healthcare planning in retirement. An optional pre-conference session provides instruction for new advisors on using Securities America’s NextPhase system, powered by Wealth2K.

Managed Money ConferenceAttendees at this conference Nov. 5-6 in Amelia Island, Fla., will hear from the third-party money managers with which Securities America partners about how to build their business and client relationships with fee-based asset management. Advisors receive an exclusive briefing on enhancements and initiatives underway at Securities America Advisors, the company’s corporate RIA, that will give advisors an even greater competitive advantage. Phil Blancato, president of Ladenburg Thalmann Asset Management, will provide an economic overview.

"The Managed Money Conference gave me an excellent opportunity to hear from multiple managers in 30-minute segments and compare their philosophies and their results, said Steve Dalton, a Securities America branch manager from Indiana. "It was the speed-dating version of evaluating money managers face-to-face. I had 15 or more money managers pitch their value proposition to me. I was then able to narrow my focus to a few specific managers I wanted to bring back to my branch and introduce."

Branch Manager Study GroupsSecurities America holds back-to-back study group meetings for branch managers at two levels: experienced branch managers who qualified for the previous year’s incentive program and branch managers who want to actively begin recruiting advisors to their group. This year’s meetings will be Dec. 1-2 and Dec. 2-3 in Chandler, Ariz.

Participants are polled in advance of the meeting to identify topics for in-depth discussions on growing and managing a sustainable long-term profitable business. Branch managers from the experienced group will serve as panelists during the second meeting to share how they have built a successful recruiting program in their branch. Because the focus is on tangible and real world tactics branch managers can implement, members of the Securities America branch office development team will be on hand to share best practices and answer questions. The experienced group will also plan and discuss branch building initiatives and risk management policies with Securities America executive leadership.

“The branch manager study group format is a great opportunity to learn from the experience and expertise of successful branch managers,” said Charles Hais, manager of Queen City Financial Advisors in Cincinnati, Ohio. “We all face similar challenges every day, so the study group format allows us to discuss and hear how others handle them. I always come away from the study group with a page full of action items and ideas that I know will be beneficial for the branch and the advisors. A key to the success of the study groups, I believe, has been the willingness of the participants to share their knowledge of what is working and what is not in their branches.”
